Tasting:

Note: We first had this Napa Cellars Chardonnay as part of the Virtual Wine Dinner: Undercurrent Restaurant; Greensboro, North Carolina, then recorked it and sipped it without food the next night.

Chilled before drinking. Clear, oat straw color. Fresh melon, apple and pineapple aromas. Very Dusty, with a robust and unusual mineral mouthfeel, medium body and a 150-grit texture. Strong pineapple and green apple flavors with continual citrus hints. Very invigorating crisp acidity and a medium-length pineapple tasting finish that ended with a lemon citrus aftertaste. This was paired with the Poached Scallops and Shrimp, Local Greens, Radish, Pickled Carrots, Pine Nuts, Lemon Poppy-seed Dressing at the wine dinner and the poppy-seed dressing and the Chardonnay were a perfect hand-and-glove pairing. We both thought it was the wine we liked best at the virtual dinner. When we sipped this without food the next evening we were both surprised how sharp the flavors and mouthfeel were without a food pairing. In the end we enjoyed it and called it a “Not Bad” California Chardonnay.
