Opened and decanted 45-minutes before drinking. Clear ruby color with the same color rim. Dominating alcohol aroma with hints of sweet cherry. VELVETY SMOOTH mouthfeel, medium body and a 800-grit texture. Cherry flavors with hints of bourbon. Soft acidity, soft almost nonexistent tannins and a medium-length fruity finish. Well what do you say about a sweet red wine that has a bourbon flavor? It was “soda pop” drinkable, a light fruit flavor and a 15% alcohol buzz. We were disappointed, but it’s at the better end of the massive category of sweet red wine that’s sold in grocery stores throughout the country e.g., if you like Meiomi Pinot Noir you’ll LOVE this one!!!
Side note: We opened this bottle tonight because it was North Carolina wine day for us. We had lunch at the Childress Vineyards Bistro. We were going to have Ruben sandwiches with their Signature Merlot, but they wouldn’t give us a taste so we didn’t pony up the $49.99 price/bottle. Instead we had chicken wraps and their over oaked Chardonnay. We go there for the delightful vineyard ambiance and excellent food and they didn’t disappoint even in the depths of the North Carolina winter. To keep a good thing going tonight we picked the only North Carolina wine in our cellar…this novelty Shelton Vineyards Bourbon Barrel Aged Red Blend.
