Tasting:

After having several “New California” Chardonnays described in Jon Bonné’s book The New California Wine, we decided to do a little centering and have an inexpensive white Burgundy. There really is nothing like the real thing!!! Read what we thought about this Chardonnay and you’ll understand why we make such a “flat-footed” statement.

Chilled before opening. Clear, dark wheat straw color. Lively, ripe pear, citrus and mock orange (Philadelphus coronarius) blossom aromas with intermittent whiffs of fresh cut lawn grass. Smooth, perky mineral structure, a couple of notches above a medium weight body and a very approachable 1000 grit texture. Easily identifiable pear and honeydew melon flavors. On the palate there was abundant crisp acidity, dusty mineral and just the tiniest hint of sweet spice or guava that ended with a luscious fresh lemon tasting finish that goes on and on. Eloquent, rich and savory white Burgundy that’s an INCREDIBLE BARGAIN. We would say this white Burgundy is like tapping a glass of fine crystal…you get a clear, clean ring or resonance, not a ho hum thump!!! Another Matt Bayless wine selection.
