Overview : Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classes 2004 & 2001

By Petronella Salvi

As with 2004 in general the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classés have turned out well with classical structures, freshness and elegance without excessive concentration. A few underperformers that showed dilution and greenness could be found but all in all this is a fine vintage and the top wines should keep well even if they seem approachable today.

 - Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classes 2001 -

In my opinion the 2001 vintage is the definition of the word “classic”. The wines have the attributes most of us are looking for in a Saint-Emilion: perfume, silkiness, fruit, freshness and structure. The wines are beginning to open up nicely and could easily be enjoyed even if the best amongst them are to have a long life ahead. Still Grand Cru Classé is a rather vast category and quality ranges from fairly feeble to top-notch.
