Côtes de Provence

OverView of the 2003 & 2004 vintage as well as the 2005 White, Rosé and Red wine vintage

What can one say about Provence The welcome is warm and generous, the area vast and the appellation system complex and difficult to understand.
The first point needs no explanation. Fine food, wonderful, garlicky Provencal dishes, fine fresh fish, Mediterranean flavours; generosity with their time and their knowledge. Lavender hedges, secluded swimming pool, home made jams for breakfast, sun, heat, mountains and sea.

The second point is important. The area covered by the Côtes de Provence stretches for 60 miles from Verdon in the north to the Mediterranean in the south and for 130 miles from Baux de Provence in the east to Nice in the west.
This therefore, quite naturally, encompasses a vast and complicated wealth of topographies, soils, geological formations and climates quite apart from a rich diversities of producers, large, small, rich, poor, simple, complicated as well as covering a wealth of different ideas and wine making practices and philosophies.

There is no way that one can begin to sum this region up in a few short lines. However, one can say that in the Basse Provence with chiefly calcareous zones, and the Cristallin zones to the south and southeast, where the Maures and the Esterel ranges have eroded and also count some eruptive zones.
The appellation is divided into 5 main zones. VAR : Massif Cristallin des Maures, Permienne Depression, Triassic Plateau and then between the BOUCHES DU RHÔNE and the VAR : Beausset Bassin, High Bassin de l’Arc.

The climate is Mediterranean. Long, dry periods in summer, a shorter dry period in winter. The mountain influence is stronger or weaker, depending upon the distance from the sea, but is constant. The sea plays the role of thermal regulator and prolongs the cool autumn weather as well as tempering the great heat and the spring frosts.Rainfall is 600 – 900mm from the North to South.
Sunshine almost always, aspires to 2,000 hours per year and the average temperature over the 365 days is 14°C – 15°C.There are 12 varieties of wind, including the famous Mistral, which has a strong drying and concentrating effect.

Areas which do not have favourable climatic conditions are excluded from the AOC Côtes de Provence. The different appellations are : Côtes de Provence, Côtes de Provence Sainte Victoire, Côtes de Provence Fréjus (brand new), Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, and Coteaux Varois en Provence. How the average consumer can be expected to remember and understand all these is both a mystery and a nonsense.

Since January 2004 the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence(Interprofessional Wines of Provence Bureau) unites and federates all the above AOC’s
[as well as the Regional Federation of Wine Shippers], which cover 95% of Provence AOC’s (NOT Bellet, Bandol, Cassis, Palette, Baux de Provence and Côteaux de Pierrevert) and cover 27,300 hectares producing 150 – 160 million bottles. Provence produces 8% of all Rosé wine.
Production is approximately 80% Rosé, 16% Red and 4% White produced by 335 private growers, 48 cooperatives and 2 cooperative unions and 59 wine shippers (négociants). Outside France, and indeed outside Provence, the region is known for its Rosé. Rosé de Provence is in shops and on wine lists throughout the world. Much less so the Red and White wines.

There are three principal methods of making Rosé – “saignée”, short skin contact or immediate, rapid pressing. Some growers prefer one; some another and some make a Rosé, which is a blend of all three methods. Modern vinification gives almost total control of the grapes once they are picked and brought to the cellars. It they are ripe, healthy with good acidity, there is little excuse for not making good Rosé.
Temperature control can take care of freshness and good vinification can produce fruity and elegant wines. It remains up to the producer whether he wants to make a wine that is a “vin de plage”, light, fresh and a mouthful of flowers and fruit or a “vin de gastronomie” – food wine, a fuller bodied, more complex and fleshy rosé with a certain amount of authority and staying power, or a Rosé that falls somewhere between the two.

Some of the small amount of White wines made is excellent. We tasted several and nearly ever property we visited gave us one to assess. Because they have mastered the art of making Rosé it was a small step for them to master White wine.
Neither of these have the tannin problems of Red wine and everybody is equipped with all the necessary temperature control equipment and great care is taken of the fruit. A minority of the growers use oak, particularly new oak, and on the whole, we preferred the fruit, freshness and purity of unoaked wines.

Red wines are becoming very “à la mode” down here and one grower said “If you want to make your mark today, you have to do it with your Red”. We were given near to a hundred reds to taste in the tasting room and more at the properties. Our personal opinion was that many growers have not yet achieved mastery of the tannins in these Red wines. Too many of them had harsh, bitter, raw or green tannins.

The grapes had clearly been picked before being phenolically fully ripe, often for fear of falling acidity or over ripe fruit. More attention needs to be paid to canopy management, yields, pruning and green pruning, deleafing and other factors that effect ripeness and the sugar content of the grapes.
When those tannins are well judged and phenolically ripe some of the resulting wines are wonderful examples of juicy, deeply fruited and succulent red wines, perfect with the Provencal weather and food. They also have enough body to be bottled and exported and spend a year or two before being consumed.

Allowed grape varieties, another complex issue in the Côtes de Provence. In the different sub – appellations the percentages and the combinations as well as those varietals permitted differ. The following list is therefore only an indication : White – Rolle or Vermentino, Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Semillon; Rosé – Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tibouren; Red – Grenache,Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mourvèdre.
There are, at present, 18 “Crus Classés” in the Côtes de Provence, scattered across this vast appellation area.

2 0 0 3 VINTAGE
The vintage was marked by exceptional heat, which was the case all over France. The hugely plentiful winter rains helped go into this period of heat well provided. Vegetation and bud break was 10 days in advance of normal. There was a big crop on the vine. May to end August was dry with record breaking temperatures. Some vines on slopes and young ones suffered hydric stress.
Late ripening sectors in the hills and vineyards close to the sea were the least affected. The vintage started from 15th August. Too many growers were inpatient and should have waited longer.
In many cases phenolic maturity had not been attained,
whilst sugar contents were high due to concentration and acidities were between 3.5 – 3.7g/l. Many of the wines have a very surprising vivid, very youthful, purple, even black hue, whilst the others have more garnet, deep red ruby with a hint of purple, which one would expect from the evolution the wine has undergone since 2003.

2 0 0 4 VINTAGE
The 2004’s were particularly impressive. The more balanced weather produced more balanced wine than the exceptional 2003.The grapes arrived in the cellars in excellent condition, healthy and unaffected by the light, autumnal rains. Acidities were perfect as there had been no excessive heat to overly diminish them.
The must weights were a touch high, and, for those who waited patiently, the phenolic ripeness was excellent. In some cases, the acidity was a little on the high side, which gave the wine a certain acidulated freshness.

The White wine have generous, ripe fruit aromas and flavours with vibrant fruit in the mouth – citrus, pear, exotic fruit and cherries. More and more growers are using oak (rightly or wrongly !) and stirring the lees. These techniques, naturally, give rather rounder, rather richer wines with vanilla and honey tones. Some like this and some dislike it intensely – it is purely a subjective taste.
The Rosé wines are clean, fresh and lively with intense colours, sometimes tinged with orange or russet. This, of course, depends upon the vinification process chosen. There are two styles of Rosé.

The lighter, easy drinking, fresh and fragrant ones to enjoy on summer terraces, the beachfront, barbeques and informal events. The more “serious” Rosé with denser, tighter, more structured and more complexity, which are ideal as food wine or for more structured occasions.
The latter will last and even improve in bottle for two to three years, and are amongst the finest Rosé in the world. For the Reds, the Grenache, suffered some “shatter”, but apart from this the yields were normal. The wines are generous and deeply fruited.

However, the average Côtes de Provence producer seems to think that it is the Red wines, rather than the far more famous Rosé, that will attract attention. Therefore, far too many growers are making huge, black, extracted monsters. Wines, which are pungent and powerful. Wines, which need years to mellow, if they ever will. They deliberately eschew the elegant and softer, pure, gentle and fragrant wines of the past.
Provence is a joyous, sun – filled region and the wines should reflect this. Emulating Australia in order to “compete” is a losing ticket. Some of those who have NOT gone this way, made the most marvellous fruity and gracious wines, which are a joy to drink, now or later. All in all the 2004 White and Rosé showed excellently and the Reds, depending upon its philosophy, expression and style, shows promise as well.

2 0 0 5 VINTAGE
Winter 2004 – 2005 had record low temperatures. However, the bud break was regular. The winter was also very dry (up to 97% deficient). Spring was sunny and dry. Summer was normal with a hot, dry August, but without excessive heat. The bud break was regular. Maturing was slow and regular as nights were usefully cool.
In early September the rain was beneficial, but the late September rain was damaging and those who had not picked had to do so immediately. Rot developed.

Careful sorting was therefore required. The vintage started from 20th August. The 2005 was a fine vintage. The Rosés are full of fruit and flavour with floral and citrus tones. The best spilled over with charm and fragrance. The Whites are balanced, aromatic, fresh, quite deep and structured in some cases and will make fine bottles of wine in a year to 18 months. The Red wines were not ready to taste and while promising extremely well, judgement must be reserved for a later tasting.
